I had made the decision not to really tell my students until next year, honestly because I didn't think it would be a big deal, and it would be more than obvious in August. Well, today in a 5th grade class where I collaborate with another teacher, the secret was shared thanks to a regular sub who didn't know the students were uninformed. Their reactions, were priceless:
"But you aren't having a baby--OH! Well, you don't look pregnant." --Bless this girl!
"Since you will be pregnant during the summer, you will probably eat lots of ice--that's what my mom did--and you will need to get some comfy slippers."
"Are you going to find out what you are having?"
"Just be prepared, they are going to be annoying."
"If she starts walking around 9 months, that is going to be really hard."
"I guess I won't make the pregnant teacher do my experiment."--His experiment is to see how long it takes teachers vs. students to eat 4 ding dongs, so I consider this rather kind!
"You are going to have to let me know if it is a boy or a girl since I won't be in school in June."
"How long have you had her in your belly?"
Their excitement and curiousity made me excited too, especially to share it with the rest of my students, but also reminded me just how loving kids are! It also made me think of the reactions of our own child one day, when he or she learns of a new sibling on the way (many years from now). And finally, I am reminded that rumor spreads FAST. One boy in the class leared of the news, and the whole class new within minutes. Who knew my pregnancy would be such a topic of gossip!
